Healthy Lifestyle Suggestions that Cost Little

There are many ways people can stay healthy and have a healthy lifestyle, to be exact, without having to put out a bunch of money.  Some of these ways may be a little more work and may cost a little money; however, in the long run, it will be well worth your effort.

Can you have a healthy lifestyle with little $$?

One of the simplest tasks to achieve a healthy lifestyle is one of the things we are taught from an early age: Good dental hygiene. It sounds so trivial, minute, and you might be asking – why?  First off, all you have to do is brush your teeth twice a day, in the morning when you wake up and at night before you go to bed, and then don’t forget to floss.  Toothpaste, toothbrushes and floss are all such a small cost these days that it seems silly to not use them regularly to avoid the ridiculously high costs of going to the dentist.  It’s not the regular checkups or cleanings that cost you so much.  It’s actually the fillings, crowns, root canals and other repairs they have to make to your teeth once they have been neglected that cost so much.  Just taking a few extra minutes a day can save you hundreds and help to keep your bright smile as healthy as possible.

Walking the Dogs

Another simple task is walking.  Yep, walking.  You don’t need to buy an expensive treadmill either.  You just need to keep moving.  Everyone knows the benefits of walking.  It helps to keep your cardiovascular levels right, your muscles stretched and toned, and, of course, your weight down by burning calories and fat.  One way to keep moving is just as easy as walking to where ever you need to go.  If you live in an area that will allow it (like living within walking distance to stores, work, restaurants, etc.), this is the easiest way to get those extra steps in.  I live just a mile and a half from my work, which takes me just about twenty minutes one way.  It is such a nice walk through neighborhoods too that I really enjoy taking this walk to and from work. On occasions, I walk up to the store, which is just about two miles away, and I collect a few things for dinner. Another thing that will help to keep you moving is adding a dog to your life.  Dogs love to go on walks and will motivate you to keep going.  Sometimes, I walk my dogs up to the McDonalds, get them a dollar burger and me, a soda.  Yes, the calories I burned while walking to and from there are all eaten up by having these treats, but it makes it feel like the walk had a purpose and my puppy loves it.

If you have never tried growing your own fruits and vegetables, this is something that I highly recommend everyone to try out at least once in their lives.  There is nothing like the taste of fresh fruits and vegetables and when you grow them on your own, you know exactly what they have in them, where they have been and where they are going. Fruits and vegetables are naturally low in calories, have the best natural sugars and are naturally more filling because of their natural fibers.  Because they are naturally filling, you can eat fewer calories but eat well more than enough to make yourself full.  In addition, gardening is an excellent way to burn calories and get your body moving in new ways that you wouldn’t normally do.  Gardening and growing your vegetables doesn’t have to cost a lot either. Starting your fruits and vegetables from seeds or even seedlings will only cost a few dollars.  Really, the only other cost involved is watering.

Healthy lifestyle = Stress free

Vegetable Garden

Gardening is also an excellent way to relieve stress.  Stress relief can be one of the cheapest things you can do to have a healthy lifestyle.  Stress can cause all kinds of health hazards from high blood pressure, to weight gain, to depression.  Keeping your stress levels low is generally cheap and easy to do.   Finding what you enjoy doing and taking the time to do it is one of the best stress relievers.  Reading can be very calming, watching a movie, taking a walk, exercises like Pilates and Yoga, painting – just doing a hobby that you enjoy can be very healthy.

Another healthy tip that costs you almost nothing and is as simple as sleeping is sleeping.  Getting the proper amount of sleep is important to everybody’s health.  Without the proper amount of sleep, people’s health starts to deteriorate.  Everything from memory loss, muscle aches, fatigue, to diabetes, high blood pressure and flu like symptoms.  All it takes is making sure that you are getting a consistent amount of sleep on a consistent basis.  Studies show that getting eight hours of sleep a night is the best way to reset your body’s natural clock and allow it enough rest to rejuvenate you.  However, although some people don’t need as much sleep as others, one should always try for at least six hours.  Just as some people can do well on less than eight hours, some need more.  Listen to your body.  Allow it to tell you how much sleep you need to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

A few other inexpensive and easy ways to stay healthy are as easy as keeping your surroundings clean.  Changing out your air filters will help to cut down on dust and allergens.  It is also important to keep your home dusted because of allergens, but also as important is keeping your counters, kitchens, restrooms, etc. clean and bacteria free.  Cleaning your bedding, blankets, towels, and clothing regularly can also help to cut down on health risks such as bed bugs, mold, bacteria, yeast, and the spread of cold and flu germs.  Taking the time to clean your home weekly is not a task that should be taken lightly.  It doesn’t really take that long and yet this one task holds worlds of health benefits for you and all of your loved ones.

Lastly, and one that I enjoy the most, is laughter.  People have always used the old adage that laughter is the best medicine. Laughter keeps people young and healthy and it is definitely free.  If there is one thing that I use often and recommend to everyone, it is definitely laughter.  For a healthy lifestyle, do this often – live, love, laugh!
